So what’s special with LHC ‘ Large Hadron Collider ‘

Technology 2 Comments »

Here, we will define LHC by metrics, I’m sure you will be surprised.

  • 27 kilometres = circumference of the LHC.
  • 50 kilometres per hour = speed limit for physicists on site.
  • 32 minutes = time taken by a law-abiding physicist to circle the ring.
  • ~1 billion kilometres per hour (99.9999991% the speed of light) = maximum proton speed around the ring. (Can you imagine? it is nearly the light of speed)
  • One ten-thousandth of a second = time taken by proton to circle the ring.
  • 0.00000000047 grams = total mass of protons circulating in the LHC at any time.
  • 362 megajoules = collective energy of LHC’s protons at top speed.
  • 88,000 tonnes = total weight of the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan.
  • 361 megajoules = energy of the USS Ronald Regan when cruising at 5.6 knots.
  • US$4.1 billion = cost of building the LHC.
  • US$4.5 billion = cost of the USS Ronald Regan.
  • ~9,000 cubic metres = total volume of the LHC’s major vacuum systems.
  • 4,650 cubic metres = interior volume of the Big Ben clock tower at Westminster.
  • 14 years = time taken to build LHC.
  • 13 years = time taken to build Big Ben.
  • ~6 million = number of DVDs needed to hold all of the data generated by the LHC.
  • 6.9 kilometres = height of 4 million DVDs stacked on top of each other.
  • 4.8 kilometres = height of Mount Blanc.
  • 0.75 grams = amount of hydrogen needed to fill a party balloon.
  • 0.000000002 grams = amount of hydrogen consumed each day by the LHC.
  • ~1 million years = time needed for the LHC to use one party balloon’s worth of hydrogen.
  • 10-13 atmospheres = vacuum of the LHC’s beamline.
  • 10-12 atmospheres = atmospheric pressure on the Moon.
  • 8.3 tesla = top field strength of each of the LHC’s 1232 superconducting dipole magnets.
  • 1 tesla = strength of a typical scrapyard electromagnet.

Why Nokia E65 ?
There are many reasons, especially WiFi. If you are looking for a WiFi phone, E65 is the best choice currently.Just because many other phones with WiFi have stupidly high price. Consider N95, if you are not going to use a 5 MegaPixel camera, why would you buy that phone for a fortune ?

Scientists claim to have broken speed of light

Technology No Comments »

optics

Some German scientists claimed lately. According to their explanations, they forced to light to overcome its speed limit. Well these are all false as to Einstein’s theory. None of the matters can not break the speed of light, if it breaks it will transform to the energy form. But they said that they broke the speed with light itself. In another aspect, if it is true will it realize human’s dream about light speed transportation?

Silicon Nanocrystal Quantum Effect Found

Technology No Comments »

I was surfing through the net and came across with this interesting article, it says “it will enhance the conversion efficiency of solar cells based on silicon”, the original article is below:

WASHINGTON, July 26 (UPI) — U.S. Department of Energy scientists reported the discovery of a unique quantum physics effect in nanocrystals.

The researchers at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, in collaboration with scientists at Innovalight Inc., discovered what they said is a new and important effect called Multiple Exciton Generation.

The effect occurs efficiently in silicon nanocrystals, resulting in the formation of more than one electron per absorbed photon, the scientists reported.

Until the new discovery, MEG had been reported during the past two years to occur only in nanocrystals — also called quantum dots — of semiconductor materials that are not presently used in commercial solar cells, and which contained environmentally harmful materials such as lead.

The new finding might lead to the application of MEG for greatly enhancing the conversion efficiency of solar cells based on silicon. That would represent a key step toward making solar energy more cost-competitive with conventional power sources, the researchers said.

The research is detailed in the on-line version of the American Chemical Society’s Nano Letters Journal.
